McLuhan: Do our schools teach us to be robots?

The quote I choose from Marshall McLuhan is his quote “Education, which should be helping youth to understand and adapt to their revolutionary new environments, is instead being used merely as an instrument of cultural aggression”. I choose this quote because I found it interesting and I wanted to analyze it more.

I believe this quote targets the education system and how in away, is teaching students to think like robots instead of embracing new ideas and conventions of learning and creativity. It suggests that students must be accustomed to what is considered a “functional society”. The quote also suggests that students are taught to conform to social norms. I also believe that this quote means that students are not taught to adapt to new cultures, and are screened to what they are exposed too. I agree with McLuhan to a certain degree. Schools used to be very sheltering in what students were learning, such as different religions and cultures and ways of thinking. However teachings are more encouraged to the ideas.
