What Is Cool?
by Karly P.
“Being cool is being your own self, not doing something that someone else is telling you to do.”
Many people spend years, doing everything possible to be considered “cool”. What is cool? Most would say that being “cool” is being popular, liked and stylish. The definition of “cool” however changes constantly-every single day. “Cool” is something that changes and evolves among the world. Though there is not one final definition of the world “cool”, there are many things that influence the meaning of the word.
The media consumes the word “cool”. It persuades people all around the world to follow the hottest trends and fashions- telling you what you should be wearing or doing. This is why large companies have celebrity endorsements; for example if Justin Bieber uses a certain product, many teenage girls around the world are going to want that product. This is a trick that many companies use to attract consumers. Cool does not however just apply to the things we have, but also the way we dress, talk, the music we listen to and the people that we are friends with. The way we dress is a perfect example of how the meaning of “cool” can change. Over years and generations, style changes regularly.
I find it interesting that styles that were cool when our parents were young, have been recycled and are now coming back into our modern every day wear. For example, high wasted shorts were something that were very popular in the 70’s, They have remerged and are something that are very popular among girls today. Trends have seemed to reappear in men’s hairstyles as well. For example, the Beatles were a major influence in long shaggy hair. Currently, long pushed back hair called “flow”, is something that is very popular with boys today.
Many people will do anything to fit in; especially in high school. Your friends become cliques, which are always labeled – whether you like it or not. You would think that being in the popular or cool clique would be a great thing; however those people are usually not as happy as you would think.
They are constantly in the spotlight, being judged by their every move. Sometimes being cool is not always as fun as it seems. What is “cool” to me is being yourself; wearing the clothes that you want to wear, listening to music that you want to listen to, and doing the things that you want to do. Be yourself, and you will find cool in everything that you do.
