The quote I chose from Marshall McLuhan was this;
“The ads are the best part of any magazine or newspaper. More pain and thought, more wit and art, go into the making of an ad than into the prose feature of press or magazine.”
I think this quote is fairly self explanatory. The purpose of an article is to give information to the reader who is interested in a specific topic, however, the point of an ad is to grab the readers attention, no matter what their interests are. This means that the ads must reach a much larger audience, hence more thought must be put into the ad. Ads give us information both consciously, and subconsciously, and perhaps tell us more about ourselves than we care to admit. If whatever method they used to catch our attention (sex, humor, etc) really work, then where does it place our morals?
I think McLuhan was very accurate in this statement. If you truly consider the thought and reason behind an ad, they are much more interesting than the article itself.
